HYDRO POWER PLANTS

Hydro power plants constitute the major source of energy generation in Georgia. About 60% of the country's electricity comes from domestic production. The rest is imported.

Construction of new Hydropower plants of various sizes and capacities is crucial for Georgia's energy security and energy independence.

Our highly qualified team is ready to contribute to this important political and economic endeavor and get involved in the construction of hydroelectric power stations of any scale and capacity.

The construction of hydroelectric power stations has a long tradition in Georgia. The production of electricity in the country began at the end of the 19th century, when heat engines and a small power plant were installed to light the Georgian Drama Theater and the Treasury Theater. The first HPP in Georgia was built in 1898 in Borjomi, with the capacity of only 103 kilowatts. By 1913, there were 7 Hydropower plants working in Georgia, however, also with very low capacity.

After the Soviet Union was established and the general plan for electrification was presented, Georgia started construction of Zahesi power plant in 1922, and Rionhesi in 1927. These HPPs provided electricity for Tbilisi and Kutaisi for years.

Later, a number of other small hydropower plants were also built across the country, on Mtkvari, Rion, Aragvi and other rivers and their tributaries. By 1941 the total capacity of Georgia’s electricity stations reached 180 mw. However, supply could not keep up with demand. This promoted the development of the Enguri dam in Svaneti. Work was initiated in 1961 and the huge dam was finally operational in 1978. To this day the Enguri hydro-power plant provides a significant portion of Georgia’s total electricity production. Its height is 271.5 m. The installed capacity- 1300 MW.
